By the time everyone signs on, this is going to be a very long list--SO, is there someplace or someone who will collect the funds and be responsible so that people can just send in contributions directly?  Actually, have we decided what it is that we will be putting Jack's name on?

Rosanne Bass (Keynan)

You're quite right, Ruth, there is an enthusiastic and growing response. Thankfully, Kathy Dalgety (retired director of the Alumni Assn.) is talking to the ETHS history department and Alumni Association about what kind of gift we'll be able to make. She further assures me that the school or the association will be able to receive donations and do all our bookkeeping. We're hoping to send out letters or individual emails, separate from this website, to let people know how to contribute. (Because the recipient organization holds 501c3 status, the contributions will be tax-deductible.) So, we all need to hang in there and wait for word from Kathy. By the way, Jack received his award at an official dinner two nights ago!

Thanks, Roseanne for filling us in on how this will work!  Also, what award did Jack receive and where?  He is way too humble to let us know.

Jack received an ETHS Distinguished Alumni Award, an alumni recognition program that started in 2003. Fred Geisler, a noted neurosurgeon and poineer in spinal-cord repair/surgery, is another person from 1964 to win the award (in 2004). They are among an AMAZING list of 60 ETHS alums to be so honored, including, Gordon Segal (founder of Crate & Barrel), Robert Galvin (Chairman Emeritus of Motorola), and Gene Nora Jessen (member of the Mercury 13 training program for female astronauts), just to name a few.

Very proud of Jack.  I'm in for the gift.  But in honoring his academic and literary prowess, we may be overlooking his impressive athletic career.  Perhaps we should donate a bench to the school in honor of where Jack (and I) sat during ETHS soccer games.

Love,

Mike

Update on the proposed establishment of our

CLASS OF 1964 HISTORY AWARD

in honor of JACK RAKOVE

Enthusiasm has snowballed (sorry to mention snow) for the idea of presenting a Class of 1964 gift to ETHS on the occasion of Jack's receiving this year's Distinguished Alumnus Award. Classmates have rallied behind Alice Rosengard's ambitious suggestion that, rather than give a one-time check or a plaque on the wall, our  gift be a monetary award given each year to one student who has shown excellence in her/his studies in history, political science or social studies. When told about it, Jack was delighted with this idea.

Need a refresher on Jack Rakove? Short version: Professor Jack holds a chair in history at Stanford, and has received a Pulitzer Prize for one of the several books he has written. His specialty is early U.S. history and the Constitution. (I'm told he's also an all around good guy.) You'll receive more specifics later. Meanwhile, have fun watching a clip of him on Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" at http://thedailyshow.cc.com/videos/uouy4o/jack-rakove

By the way, when Jack was recently in Evanston to receive his award he spoke at an assembly of seniors, attended some classes, met with history teachers and kibitzed at the award presentation dinner. (I'm hoping that some photos of all this will show up on our website if they haven't already.)

Kathy Dalgety (I'm going to use everyone's high school names in this update), Preston Cook and I, with input from the school's offices, have worked up a basic  plan. You'll hear more about this in a few days. (A crucial staff member is on vacation until Feb. 11th, but shortly after that we should have the logistics of contributing under way.) Watch for notification via this website and a personal email. Meanwhile, special thanks to the Reunion Committee without whom all the happy re-connections wouldn't have happened, to Fred Brostoff, webmaster supreme . . .  and to the these people who have offered to get the ball rolling!

I want to contribute, too. I remember Jack well from Mrs. Ziegler's AP English class. It was absolutely clear then he would go on to very important accomplishments!

I thought I had posted that I wanted to be included as well, but can't find my post.  I also wanted to thank Rosanne for giving the link to Jack on the Jon Stewart show, that was really great to watch him and see his cool, confident manner.  Way to go Jack!

Thanks, Sherry! We have just added your name. We hope that by next week or so this site will contain details on how to contribute. (The school will be handling the accounting and banking.)
