Thank you, Robert,  for the wonderful poems that you have written for  all of us in 2014.  We really enjoyed             reliving some of our past, present and in some cases the future (!)  through your precious insight!  May the holidays bring you much joy and a great  New Year for all of us!                                                                                  My Best to everyone!  Kind thoughts and many great memories!   Holly Underwood

Fred Brostoff

To begin the retirement phase of our lives, Shelly and I will be driving from Chicago to Florida in order to board a cruise to the southern Caribbean.  The drive to and from Florida will be a scenic one, taking us through the following cities:

  • Knoxville, TN
  • Asheville, NC
  • Charleston, SC
  • St. Augustine, FL
  • Daytona Beach, FL
  • Bonita Springs, FL
  • Valdosta, GA
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Nashville, TN

We have some points of interest already identified in Charleston, St. Augustine and Nashville...but I'd love to receive your suggestions for things to do in any or all of the above locations.

Fred, a must see in Asheville is Biltmore, the Vanderbilt estate. It is one of the best historic houses to tour and the vast grounds are equally impressive.

Fred;when do you expect to be in Bonita  Springs? That's less than 10 minutes from our house and we are just 3 minutes off I75! We could possibly have a ETHS get together at my home or lunch at our club at that time. Jay@siegall.com

Fred - when do you and Shelly plan on being in NC?  Possible timing for a "lunch bunch" gathering?  Judy is absolutely right about Biltmore.  We have not had time to venture to that part of the state yet but from all we have heard, it is a must see.

In Nashville I recommend the hop-on-hop-off trolley which will take u everywhere in town - board at Hard Rock Cafe near the river - park @ HRC.

Tennessee History Museum is a must see.

Also in town is a neat Auto museum.

Why not detour to Memphis and spend the night on Beale St and visit Elvis?

Happy New Year!

Fred:  Should you be driving I-65 between Louisville, KY & Nashville, TN the national Corvette Museum is a Bowling Green, KY.  They also offer tours of the plant, but I think it's best if you schedule a plant tour on line ahead of time.

My wife & I have toured Biltmore House at least 3 times.  The last time we did the toured it was decorated for Xmas.  Multiple tours are offered including 1 that takes you behind the scenes to see how the house ran & another that takes you out on some rooftoops.

Oops.  I meant to say rooftops.  Also, I forgot to mention that as members we can get discount tickets through our local AAA office.

  • Knoxville, TN - Detour to see Great Smokey National Park
  • Asheville, NC - Biltmore for sure, and enjoy the arts and crafts shops downtown and on the Blue Ridge Parkway heading north to the visitor center.
  • Charleston, SC - bike and walk the old town to enjoy the wonderful old houses
  • St. Augustine, FL - the old Spanish fort is amazing, the old town full of interesting buildings and shops, and Flagler College gives regular tours from the main lobby that are surprisingly good.
  • Daytona Beach, FL
  • Bonita Springs, FL
  • Valdosta, GA
  • Atlanta, GA - Altanta Underground
  • Nashville, TN - The Grand Old Opery, State Capital, the guitar shops downtown, and look around Vanderbilt University

Have fun, and thank for this whole wonderful web site from an appreciative classmate.

In St. Augustine the Santa Rosa restaurant on the waterfront for sea food and Columbia in the old part of town for tapas in a lovely setting are 2 I've really enjoyed.  Paula Massey

Sincere thanks to my classmates who provided guidance for points of interest and restaurants along our route from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale (and back).  Many good suggestions that I will be sure to include in our adventure.

Fred, In the Bonita Springs area, the Edison Ford Winter Estates, http://www.edisonfordwinterestates.org/about/what-youll-see/ in Ft. Myers is well worth visiting, especially if you are fascinated by Thomas Edison.

Still not sure I have mastered the use of this page -- and forgive me, Jack Rakove, if you are viewing this intended surprise -- but I'd like to know if people might be interested in contributing to a group gift to some special fund or purpose at ETHS in honor of Jack's award. I propose that only those interesting in contributing (at any amount) do so and the gift be in the name of the class of 1964. Thoughts?
