School Story

Class rank at ETHS was an embarrassing official 891 out of 919!
First year at Buena Vista College (600 students) in Storm Lake, IA population 4000 in the entire county! Only place that would take me!

Then 1.5 yrs in Champaign at U of I Had to leave due to grades!
While working 60 hours per week in Furniture store I continued at:

One semester at Central YMCA community. Made Deans list.
Two years at Roosevelt University! Needed on freshman level philosophy course about Aristotle, Socratese, Homer etc. Just could not read and retain all that double talk stuff. Got married 6-7-69 day after my last class and continued to,work full, time without school.

Having 160 hours credit but not one required course to graduate, in 1981 while living in Hollywood, FL I went to VISIT THE DEAN OF THE BUISINESS SCHOOL at Roosevelt. We negotiated thru many issues since grad requirements had changed in 13 years plus residency requirements. He agreed if I took 2 400 level courses he approved at a school he approved and got B's, I would get my BSBA degree! I went to night school for the 2 courses at Florida Atlantic University. WALA!
After functionally being a college grad for 13 years, I now really had the degree. Really did not make a difference in my life as I have always been self employed since 1971!

I do believe that ETHS HAS A HUGE EFFECT ON WHO I AM and the Evanston school system. While obviously not much of a student, I got more from the osmosis of sitting in that school system for 10 years than many of the average classmates I encountered at 5 different colleges.
Even with out personal effort, Evanston made me prepared!

I think I may have the distinction of having one of the lowest class ranks to actually graduate from College with a 4 year degree! I owe it to where I came from and the influences of being surrounded not only by a great school system but by the diversety and motivation I witnessed in my classmates and competition in athletics and real life experiences at ETHS!
Wow, did I write all that?
With love to ALL that made up,our class at ETHS. Even with out specific courses, ETHS AND growing up in the Evanston, we were better prepared for life than many of our peers!

Every notice is difficult losing our class mates. Injust sat in stunned silence, devestated by Mike Barnes and Janet Leahys passing. They just get harder and harder. Have known Mike since ETHS swimming freshman year and we have been in touch over the years and have had FB connection and always looked forward to reunions.  Just rambling in shock at the realization of another friend I hadn't spoken to perhaps for a year and now another never to be spoken to again. A good guy gone. RIP buddy!!RIP!????

Janets passing is just devestating!  I have gotton teary eyed at dozens of these sad notices. Janet was one of the most beautiful people inside and out. Upon being notified of her passing 2 days ago I just came to a stop unable to work the rest of the day!. Janet was a girl/lady I've adored since I met her at Nichols.

I was so looking forward to seeing her next Feb or March when I was hopinfg to have another mini reunion at my home in Florida as she would usually attend. Next years mini reunion the 60th year of our graduation will have a huge void without Janet's presence!. 2 days later I still well up with tears as I write this.

RIP beautiful lady. So many will miss you and I cant imagine the loss felt by Fran and her kids and grand kids. :-(

Kathy:

He passed in 2006! I was going thru the in memory list by year trying to recall how long a friend had been gone. Intake the teary eyed journey Thru the list once in a while and saw Arts name in 2006 and NO comments or reflections on knowing him! Needed to change that!! No clue what happened to him but do recall he had lots of stomach problems in HS and had scars from surgeries!!

While I didn't know Barry well we were familiar and got along well. Agree with Larry he was a good guy and got along with most everyone!

Larry: Wish youhad asked me for Laz info as I have obtianed every copy of the Alumni directory when available and Laz had an entry in the 2013 & 2018 edition. Dont recall if he camde to any reunions and since remodeling the house havent located my reunion books yet but do have the Alumni directory .

Glad we got to talk recently. Stay well. We need to keep our names out of here!! :-)

And I mean that for ALL WILDKITS!!

So sad. Another classmate and Wildkit who led a productive life gone TOO TOO soon. Every notice brings tears to my eyes regardless of how well I knew them or not. 90% of the names are familiar to me! RIP Carol!

Thank you Holly for your great memories of Bonnie I had known and been her classmate since Mrs Schwartz's  2nd grade at Oakton school and then 3rd to 6th grade at Dawes!! She led an active life and her passing is a shock. RIP Bonnie. Wish I had had one more conversation with you!

These notices are all difficult. This is one of the toughtest ones for me. Barry and I were classmates at Dawes School since 3rd grade and thru Nichols and ETHS. We were as seniors part of a car pool with Sherry Huff, LArry Schwimmer and Bernie Krule. I would say we were very good friends thru out the years. My late son and I visited Barry in Albuqurque, NM when we were looking for a private school there for my son. Had a great time and visit with Barry at the time having a very good talk with my son regarding my sons issues with POT at the time. That was when my son Brett was about 15. Even thru Brett's 30's he would occasionaly ask about Barry! And Barry would always ask me about Brett. The last time I spoke with Barry was in April last year after Brett's suicide! Barry was one of the sweetes kindest soft spoken people you could ever know. Unfortunatly I had no idea he had health issues or what had happened. RIP my friend. You are missed!!!!!!
