Many thanks to Jay and Alyn Siegall for hosting a Florida luncheon for our class on February 13 at the Siegall's home in Miramar Lakes, Florida (near Naples).

After just returning to Ft. Lauderdale that morning after a southern Caribbean cruise, Shelly and I drove across "alligator alley" on I-75 and made it to Jay's home just in time for the class get-together.  It was great to spend a relaxing few hours with my "southern-based" classmates...chatting, swapping lies and enjoying the luncheon spread provided by the Siegalls.

Thanks again to Jay and Alyn for their generous hospitality.

To those who remember Joyce Fetzer Schutten from Lincoln School, just got this sad news from her husband:

Dear Friends,

Joyce passed away Saturday (Feb. 28, 2015).
She felt fine that morning, and was very excited about a new chiropractor who was beginning to give her hope about her migraines (35 years worth). We made plans to go out to lunch and she made some dinner for us. Then she started feeling poorly. She noticed her heart valve wasn't making the usual clicking sound. She didn't want to go to the hospital - just rest. She went to bed but couldn't sleep. Her migraine had starting up again and she called me from the other room to say she had trouble breathing. Her breaths were making a bubbling sound.  I called 911.
The paramedics gave her oxygen and she started feeling better. Then she passed out. Her heart stopped. They managed to get her heart going but she never regained consciousness and finally it just quit.
Right now, she is with Jesus Himself, feeling no pain and having the best day she's ever had.

On Tuesday, I'll let you know when services are to be held. Probably this weekend - March 6 or 7.

I apologize for not being able to talk to you all in person as Joyce would have preferred.

David

Rosanne Bass (Keynan)

I am sad to see that we have lost another classmate --too many premature deaths among our friends. For that reason, the Class of 1964/Jack Rakove History Award is setting up an online donation link whereby a gift can be given in memory of a friend or loved one. This should be enabled within a few days. Meanwhile, condolences to all who knew Joyce.

For those of you primarily reading the Message Forum, please go to the Home Page for the announcement of the newly created Class of 1964/Jack Rakove Award in History.  Below you will find a copy of that notice.  For those of you that would like to donate to this award please go to the entry "Class of 1964 Jack Rakove" notice in the left hand column of the Home Page.  We want to thank all of you who have pledged over $10,000 to date for this award. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to make it a lasting annual award.

It’s happening!

The Class of 1964/Jack Rakove Award in History

The ETHS history department every year will name an outstanding “late bloomer,” a senior who did not begin high school as an academic superstar, to receive $1,000 and a book written by our classmate Jack, a Pulitzer Prize winner and Stanford professor.

The germ of this idea took root on our reunion website, with over 40 people expressing support. The more of us who participate, the more meaningful the award. Please join the classmates who have pledged.

To donate online or by check – and to read full details about the Class of 1964 award — go to the left column on this page and click on the link “Class of 1964/Jack Rakove Award.”  Donations of any amount are appreciated, and all are tax-deductible.

Picking up on Preston Cook's call to action, I just donated to our Class of '64/Jack Rakove Award, in memory of my late brother, Alan Bass, ETHS Class of 1968.

I'd like to challenge the people who came to the mini-reunion lunch in the San Fernando Valley last month to contribute  --  as well as to post a photo or two from the get-together on this site.

I made a donation.  Thanks to all who organized this award.   I was not able to attend the reunion but have reconnected with a dear high school friend in the Hudson Valley as a result of the planning and energy that went into this website and the actual event.  To renew old friendships is truly a gift.  Again, many thanks.

Jack Rakove

Having just sent in my contribution to the Class gift that carries my name, I want to add a few remarks of my own. I am deeply grateful to Rosanne for first proposing the idea and to Preston and Kathy for doing so much to get it organized. And it has also been truly pleasing to see how many classmates and old friends have already contributed or promised to do so. The idea behind this, which Kathy helped to work out with the social studies department, is neat, too, because rather than award excellence alone, it takes into account intellectual growth and the whole process of individual students coming alive to learning in the course of high school. It is thus a tribute to teachers as well as students, which is why I dedicated my gift to a few teachers who did so much for me: Bernard Mattson, Thomas Sharp, and Nadine Clark. All of this really fits, I think, with what ETHS has become: still an excellent school like the one we attended, but also one that has evolved significantly over the half century (that amazing period) since our graduation.

Finally, on a more personal note, I have been fortunate to pick up a few honors over my career, but in some ways the ones that are sweetest involve places or associations with which one already has a link. That is the case here, which is why this means so much to me.

I have proudly  made contribution to the Jack Rakove Award in memory of:

My Brother Howard A Siegall ETHS 1959, 1942-2010
All our departed classmates, and thanks to Jack's thoughts bringing up the issue, to my parents, Leo and Beverly Siegall for having the foresight in moving our family to Evanston in 1953 from the Austin area on the west side of Chicago!

Jack , I do wish sitting by you in North Hall Home Room every day for 4 years would have resulted in my being a better student.....but I DO know that I am a better person for having been surrounded by you and the other members of our wonderful class!!!

Thanks, Jack, for your beautiful response to this honor carrying your name.  It displays the qualities that exemplify what this award should be about - excellence, humility, gratitude, and a philosophy of life that resonates with all of us.  How right you are regarding how especially "sweet" it has all been reconnecting with our classmates with whom we shared four precious years, That has been the reward for all of us.  You phrased it just right!
