The main thing is that you're safe.

Jay:  I'll bet you are thrilled that you completed all of your remodeling before Ian.  If you were wanting to start now you wouldn't be able to find any workers or supplies.  Any supplies you could find would be 3-4 times more expensive than before the storm.  You'll find that out when you try to replace your birdcage.  When I went through Frances and Jeanne in 2004, the cost for a birdcage jumped from about $15K, to $30K, and one neighbor who had a large, elaborate birdcage paid $45K.  Can't imagine what they will go for in the ground zero area for this storm.

As of this past Tuesday I was expecting to lose my birdcage because the centerline of the "Cone of Uncertainty" was right over the top of my house in western Marion County.  Fortunately for us in Ocala the storm track moved to the southeast and we ended up with hardly a leaf out of place. Having been in Florida since 1986, I should have known the track would shift before landfall.  But, I brought all my patio furniture inside, took down the fragile coachlight globes out front, and did all the proper preparation history said I should do.  Glad I was still able to do all that.

Jay, I wish you all the best in your recovery from the storm.  It will take some time before things start looking normal again, but eventually it will.

Vic

One week ago when Ian was turning up the west coast of Florida,  Ian was heading into Pinellas and Pasco counties.  We were in for a direct hit.  Living on pins and needles Monday and Tuesday knowing a direct his was headed to Pasco and Pinellas counties was devastating.  Preparing one's home with a kat 5 hurricane bearing down on you ----- words cannot express the fear!

Waking up Wednesday, TV on immediately to see the path had shifted and land fall would be south. I had a sigh of relief, but at the same time knowing what would happen south of us.

I have lived in the Tampa area (New Port Richey) since 1972.  We have weathered numerous hurricanes.  NOTHING LIKE THIS ONE.  Going across the state.  Up the north east coast and then on to the Carolinas is unbelievable.  To me, this is an eye opener of the future of GLOBEL WARMING.

Prayers for other Florida classmates impacted by Ian

We have owned property on Sanibel Island for almost 50 years. It was our paradise from home since we moved to London. Seeing the destruction on the island is heartbreaking and watching the suffering from so many people who have lost everything. What next?? We won't get a report on the condition of our flats until search and rescue is completed and people will be ferried back to Sanibel. I hope all my Floridian classmates are safe and well. Too much sadness.

Laurie Dolinky Moss:

So sorry about the Sanibel disaster. Are you able to confirm your property was severely affected?

Please know that you always have a room here if you come to inspect the damage....or anytime for that matter!

Only caveat is if the kids are here which is not often and usually around holidays since my daughter teaches and dons kids are still in school.

Any time you have a weeks invitation and could be longer if needed. AND you are free to come and go and use our home as a base to operate from We want to spend time with you but neither of us should feel obligated to enter tain the other all day every day. We will make time for sure. Those are my rules. Come and go as you are on vacation!!

Hope to see you. Be well and best to Mr Moss!

BTW we aer just 8-10 minutes from the airport here in Fort Myers or do you fly to Miami and drive here?

And we have white sand beaches on freshwater lakes!

Hugs, Jay

I live on Longboat Key a barrier island to Sarasota. When a hurricane comes you remove everything off your balcony's which i had one facing east and 1 facing west. They both were full of large pots with flowers and places to watch the bay . It's on the first living floor with 2 level of garages below. We have 9foot glass doors and windows that can take 110 mph winds. Extremely well built but you never want to find out if they can mustard a hurricane.
i did fly to Chicago the Monday before it hit to attend my brother Chuck (86) funeral. He was an amazing man , a loving brother and also an ETHS graduate. He will be greatly missed. Luckily i had seen him in August. We always had lunch when i visited.  Thank you Betsy Steinman on you remembering. I also got to see Judy Anderson who knew him.
Then i tried to get home. The Sarasota airport had been damaged but was to open Thursday. I fly Delta and always have to go via Atlanta. I was traveling with a nephew ,Bill, and his wife who live in Jacksonville. So we got to Atlanta on Thursday and stayed with his daughter, and i with his son Stevie. I had a flight on Friday am which was canceled that am. I spent 30 minutes with Delta and got a flight to Tampa in 3 hours. I had all my luggage with me. I took Marta to the airport and got home by230pm. We had been spared any real damage. Lots of landscape distroyed . The north end of the island had no power but the south , where i lived, was working. It was an emotional long 5 days. But I'm safe and home. I have friends up and down the state and all are ok. I feel for those who have lost everything. May we help them rebuild.

I'm in Naples. Serious Storm Surge Damage here. I was only without electricity for 2 days, WiFi 4 days. I did have a generator to save the refrigerator contents. The weather after Ian was very comfortable, like a cool Front moved-in. Frank Zeman

I am in The Villages and somehow this whole area was spared any real damage.  Power did not go away, internet/cell service never went down.  As The Villages develops further south, I hope those folks were as fortunate as I. Good to start hearing from other ETHS '64 grads getting through such an interesting weather event, one way or another.

Let the Sunshine In

“When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars.
Then peace will guide the planets.
And love will steer the stars.
This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius,
Age of Aquarius --- Aquarius!
Let the sunshine. Let the sunshine.
Let the sunshine in, the sunshine in.”
Hair (1967)

This year’s summer is done,
Fall is here, and it’s time to let the sun
Shine in through the window.
Pull the shades open, so
The heat of the sun’s glow
Can warm up the house. It can save someone

From turning up the heat,
And using up gas to warm up their feet.
Though that time will come when
Winter’s cold comes again,
And the heat’s needed. Then
The radiator can heat up the seat

Cushions, for winter’s chill.
But now, it’s October, so the sun will
Do the trick by shining
In through the glass, filling
The room with light, warming
Me with solar heat to last me until

Night. Till summer, again,
Will come and make rooms too hot next year. Then
The shades will be pulled down.
But now fall’s come to town.
A tree's wearing a gown
Of red outside, which means I can open

The shades, let the sunshine
In, and dream, where Jupiter can align
Mars. Then Aquarius
Makes life hilarious
For youth vicarious
That sing along with the song of the sign

That marked the Zodiac,
When my long hair that once went down my back
Appeared, when my youth was
Driven to fight because
Of many unjust laws
That needed the sunshine to show their lack

Of justice and fairness.
And we sang songs for love and happiness.
And now the song for love
Appears in stars above.
And we call on the dove
Of peace to return, as the sun will bless

The day that will begin
With dawn rising in the world’s earthly spin.
Let the sunshine. Let
The sunshine in. Forget
The dark and be well met
By the sun, as we let the sunshine in.

From your web support team:     It is never pleasant to get a virus, spam or ransomware. There are folks on the internet trying try to grab control of your computer and do nasty things, like sending your classmate friends an email and when they respond they ask for online gift cards. So a few reminders:  Our classmates' website is an https site. The 's' after http means we pay extra to get a higher level of safety from the bad actors. But once you leave our ETHS64 classmates pages, the protection is gone. So, suggestion: be aware of risks when clicking on offsite links. Another good suggestion: Back up your computer often to the cloud or an external drive that is disconnected from your computer after the backup is finished. Having a good backup makes it easier to repair a compromised computer.

Thanks for being active member on our ETHS64 classmate website.

Traveling Into Time

Traveling into time

Is what I’ll do, in the universe I’m

Traveling in. I will

Travel on, while I’m still

Here, enjoying life, till

I reach the end of time with one last rhyme.

I hope my traveling

Will be pleasant, till my poem will bring

Me to the final verse,

When my atoms will disperse,

For better or for worse,

Since there is an ending to everything.

But until then I’ll try

To keep it simple and let the words I

Write reveal my thoughts of

Life and the need for love,

A happiness far above,

A happiness that takes me to the sky,

As I travel and lift

My eyes up high, each day that is my gift,

As time goes by, and I’m

Still traveling in time.

Up to the sky, I’ll climb,

In my imagination, where I’ll drift

Into the future, while

I explore the past, which brings a smile

To me, as I enjoy

Memories and I toy

With being a young boy

Again, but no longer needing to style

Myself to match what was

In, in my youth or what’s in now because

There is only what I’m

Able to do with rhyme,

As I travel in time,

In my old body that’s full of the flaws

That are caused by aging,

Getting older, where time is damaging

To every body part,

Bones, joints, brain and heart,

All parts that had their start,

When I turned into a human being,

And began traveling,

Once upon a time, at the beginning

Of me. But now I’m old,

Much older, truth be told,

Than the body, the mold,

Prepared by evolution for that thing

Called “human” life which I

Am, as I’m traveling into time by

The only road I know.

There’s nowhere else to go,

But into time, although

There are still choices, new things you can try

It’s up to you or me

To find the path through what’s left of “To be,”

When we know that time must

Win the race we’re in, “Dust

To Dust.” Time is unjust,

But it’s just time, and it’s reality.

We can’t escape it, though

The mind may want to find somewhere to go,

Beyond the boundaries

Of time to fantasies,

And ancient mysteries,

That are not real, but may be tales we know.

We may believe in them,

Or we may think they’re foolish, and condemn

Them into the darkness

They came from. A madness

Of the mind. Nothingness.

Though they’re just sayings like an apothegm

That refers to tomorrow

As another day. And, of course, we know,

The sun will come up, then.

As time goes by, again,

And I’ll remember when,

And try to enjoy what I can borrow

From time, as I pass through

Tomorrow and tomorrow. It’s the new

Day, today, time to say,

O.K., I’m on my way,

And wish you a good day,

From one who’s traveling into time to

Another, who also

Must obey the laws of space-time. You know

There is no other way.

Yesterday, then today

Then “tomorrow,’ they say,

“Is another day.”  So that’s where I’ll go.

I hope to see you there.

Today, I’m traveling into time. Where

Else can I go? So I’m

Traveling into time,

Going from rhyme to rhyme.

And, of course, you know, I’ve got rhymes to spare.

Carol Simon Kohn died Monday, Oct. 17, 2022 after an illness.  She had been happily living at the Eastern Star Home of Illinois in Macon IL, near Decatur.  She and her late husband Charles Kohn were very active in Eastern Star and used to attend the group's conventions downstate.  They also were active in volunteering to work on the July 4th celebrations in Skokie, where they lived. Carol moved into the Eastern Star Home shortly after her husband died in 2020, and had been elected president of the patient council there.

Thank you, Susan, for the information. I'll inform the Alumni office and mention Carol's passing in the upcoming edition of The KIT. You were a true friend to Carol over the years, and I'm sorry for your loss, as well as for Carol's sister. Carol was a unique person, and I'm glad her last few years were happy for her.

Carol and I were Girl Scouts together at Skiles and ETHS.  Over the years, we'd talk from time to time.  I remember her family and her sister Jeanne, fondly.  I am saddened by her death, and I pray she rests in peace.
