Last year we put in an air to air heat pump. Heats and cools down to about 35F. When temperature is lower than that, installed Steffes Heaters in the house. Needed two of them - one per floor. This product is used up north. Has about 300-400 pounds of bricks and several oven elements and a fan. We then switched to time of day electric rates. 6 cents/kwh at night. 14 cents onshoulder, 22 cents on peak for 5 hours. Used timers to  charge the Steffes at night with cheap power and cycle the fan on shoulder/peak times. Cut our elec bill about 40% annually. We had gas heat before. Dropped it. Now totally electric at a competitive utilty cost. Next step if we do it is supplement power with some solar panels.

To all that responded to my post,

Thank you for each of your insites and comments. In answere to a couple of comments, what we aquiered for mooch 'O' bucks was a heat pump and some cookies. I suppose cookies beats a sucker but then I would have had one very expensive sucker, opposed to many expensive cookies. Although, they might have supersized the sucker which causes me to wonder if the installer has stock in the dental industry, what with the massive sugar content and all. May be if the whole ball of wax had just come wrapped in pure gold foil....alas, one can still dream.

Absolutely, all the best,

The cookie guy!

Good for you, Art, for getting a heat pump.  I was on my condo Board when, a few years ago, our boiler was dying and we replaced it - with a boiler!  I did not even know about heat pumps at the time, and when I first learned about them, I thought they wouldn't work for northern climes like Chicago.  But I see they do now.  Glad you lowered your electric bill!

Lynda, thanks for mentioning my house in your post.  My Dad was meticulous in keeping it painted. . .which was tough on the neighbors cars and boats when he got to our picket fence.  The Cub you are talking about is Dale Long, a first baseman.  Nice man but his son was a bit of a jerk. Hope to see you at the reunion.

My wife and I are very proud of our daughters, I'd like to make that clear. We don't however normally use social media to brag about them -- their accomplishments speak for themselves and they speak to whom they really matter. But I have to make an exception for our younger, Annie, who's head of Canopie, an online maternal mental health startup, and I couldn't resist offering this recently-published interview with her because...well, dang! It's Forbes!                          https://www.forbes.com/sites/sorensonimpact/2024/08/21/innovative-solutions-for-maternal-mental-health/

The interview also helped me get a better understanding of what she's doing.

@Bill Wanlund

I read the article you linked and went to Canopie's website as well. You are justifiably proud of Anne.  Thanks for shraing that.

Preston, congratulations on your legislation. I should pass my support to my representative. Hey, should we have a Eagle event at the reunion?  We could all wear something of an eagle.  I think I have one feather that could pass.

Bill, you are justifiably proud of your daughter's work.  Maternal mental health is an issue in the US, and  must be critical in Africa where the resources are so limited.  Kudos to her.  What she's doing is very important and impressive.  My daughter, too, specializes in maternal and child health, for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.

Thanks, Jack. Thanks, Renee -- and applause for your daughter, too. You're right: It's important work that's badly needed.and underappreciated.

In conjunction with our class's 60th Reunion Celebration on September 13th & 14th, several folks have asked whether we might be able to arrange a tour of ETHS's facilities sometime that weekend. Unfortunately, the school is unable to accommodate that request due to the Centennial Celebration at Lazier Field that Saturday afternoon (See Event #2 on the 60th Reunion - Event Details tab.). However, for those who either live in the Evanston area or are planning to visit it, ETHS hosts campus tours for interested individuals on many Saturdays from September to April:

I add my congratulations to you, Preston. Every person to whom I mentioned this legislation had been under the impression that the bald eagle was already designated as the national bird. You have indeed accomplished something significant and lasting.

Whiie on vacation in mid-coast Maine a few weeks ago, I looked up from my lobster dinner to see a bald eagle flying over the restaurant. The next day I stopped in at the local post office. On the wall there was an article about the eagle that comes to the area every year. Lucky me to have spotted him--or her.

Congratulations Preston for the hard work you did on fighting in favor for the American Bald Eagle to becoming the official state bird of the USA. You should be so proud of what you have done. Look forward to seeing you next month and thanking you in person.

Lauren Dolinky (Moss)

laurie (Dolinky) MossHi Preston. I am in Alaska on a cruise which has been on my list of to-do for a long time. As you must know the conversation is often about sighting bald eagles. I saw 2 in Haines. Yes, I even mentioned to our tour guide there about the bald eagle finally becoming the official state bird of the U.S.  she said but it always has been! So much misinformation. Congrats on your achievements. I look forward to meeting you at the reunion. I'm certain you must have been to Alaska. It has fulfilled my dreams of being a very special place!!

Hi, Gang, as many of you know I had open-heart surgery this summer. It was a little rough but I am doing fine now. Looking forward to the reunion. If any of you in the Indianapolis area and would like to help carve pumpkins, let me know. I have several displays each year, but this year I'm still a little weak. See you soon

Lee

For those folks who are attending this weekend's reunion, you might want to take a half-hour to swing by 1319 McDaniel Av. and check out the latest handiwork of the ETHS Geometry in Construction class that designs and builds affordable housing for Evanston residents. It's the 9th house they've built over the last twelve years. (I apologize for the odd way the link to this story in Evanston Now is displayed below, but I wasn't able to edit it. I don't think clicking it works, but copy-and-paste should. If it doesn't, though, you might want to go to the periodical's site itself and look for it there: "ETHS student-built house is set into place")

You are so impressive with your work, research and eagle museum. So glad you have done these magnificent  projects and accomplishments. You are saluted by us all. Let's just say, " You soar with Eagles " It has been an honor to know you, grow up near you in school and watch you thrive with Evanston activities in your younger days. Topping that, with successful law practice in CA.. and a beautiful life in MN with such focus to prepare others for a lasting memorial to laud the American Eagle. You are one of a kind!!

To Don, Bob, Eric, and the entire 60th reunion committee,

It was a wonderful weekend!  Thanks so much for your hard work in providing those of us who were able to come to the events with the opportunity to make additional memories with our classmates. How lucky we were and how lucky we still are to be able to share the reality of a fabulous ETHS education with so many truly exceptional individuals of all ilks, backgrounds, and interests.  Orange and blue are noble colors always to be worn with pride. It was great to see you all. Thanks for the memories!

Ruth
