Can't wait to see it.  It's only a few hours away.  Let us know when it is open.

What an impressive contribution you are making, Preston! Thank you. But, there is something not mentioned, something left out in your post! What objects are you keeping? Anything you so treasure that you can't let it go, such as one of the military buttons that inspired your passion? Curious minds want to know.😊

Hello Judith,  I spent several years making the decision to entirely give up the collection. It was not always easy, however terms and conditions in the gifting allow for me to keep what I want during my lifetime.  Also there is no deaccessioning in my lifetime without my written permission.  I also have unlimited access to the collection and am a permanent member of the committee overseeing all items.  I feel good I can no longer be called a hoarder, but now a donor, sharing the collection with others.

Well said, Preston.  You are a lucky guy.  Not many can say they have their dreams fulfilled. And now your dream has been given to all of us.  Thank you for your inspiration and I look forward to visiting your Museum!

Hi Preston,
Just wanted to add my congratulations on your accomplishments. I am sure collecting was a pleasure but it sounds like negotiating the gift was a really hard task.

I loved hearing about this on Veteran's Day weekend.

Thanks, Cindy

Always knew you would do well in your life's passion. Congratulations on this awesome achievement that will now be shared by many. Your book was amazing and now your placement of your collection to this museum will leave the mighty eagle with a permanent home. You soar with the eagles!

Preston, how exciting that you are sharing your collection with the world. Very generous of you. You have the strength of the eagle in you to be able to donate all of your collection. You have lived the ETHS dream.

Preston,

Well done.  I note the National Eagle Center's tag line states "...While others fly, We Soar." is also a fitting tribute to you and your generosity.  Most of us recognize that it takes a successful professional career to support one's avocation.  That you have been able to meet your objectives on both ends is admirable.  As you probably know, but others without a military service background may not be aware; the officer's service cap at its front has an Eagle emblem with an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other talon with thirteen stars over the Eagle's head representing the founding states of our republic.  The symbology is poignant as your lifelong effort is...please send us all an invitation to the re-openning next year.  Many regards.

Preston,so glad we were able to stop at the Eagle Center several years ago. It was spectacular then. I can't wait to see it after the renovation. I have been listening to John Denver and his "I am the Eagle" song. So inspiring to hear of the magnificent scope of your gifts. Thanks!!!

Many thanks on donating your collection to the museum for all of us to enjoy. What you have done is quite an achievement and underscores thre responsibility all of us have to give something back to a country that we have been so fortunsate to live in. Your collection will be your legacy and live on forever,so well done. I dont travel much but I would surely lke to add a visit to the museum after it opens to my bucket list! Thanks so much for all the postive feedback and good wishes for the Eagle Museum and my eagle project.

Robert, an "Eagle" poem would be a wonderful addition to the collection.  You would be joined by the following poets who have mentioned an eagle in their poems (partial list):

John Greenleaf Wittier

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Edgar Lee Masters

Emily Dickenson

Sidney Lanier

Robinson Jeffers

Robert Frost

Edgar Allen Poe

Walt Whitman

I'll work on it. My first thoughts to Eagles led me to the hotel California.

Such a lovely place

Marty,  Most of my "eagle" poems are in the National Eagle Center's Archive Building in Wabasha, MN.  I am in California, however, I found a small amount of material you asked for.  It is not in any order, nor is it a complete list.  Eagles in poems and literature have a long history.  Likely there are hundreds of poems about eagles or referenced in poety.

John Greenleaf Wittier, “On Receiving an Eagle’s Quill from Lake Superior”

Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Fate”

Edgar Lee Masters, “Black Eagle Returns to St. Joe”

Emily Dickenson, “No Rack Can Torture Me”

Sidney Lanier, “Dear Land of All My Love”

Robert Frost, “Auspex”

Edgar Allen Poe, “To One in Paradise”

Walt Whitman Dalliance of the Eagles in Leaves of Grass

Jeffers, Robinson, “The Beaks of Eagles”

Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth “The Day is Done”

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, “The Eagle”

Eagles, other Byrds, and the Hotel California

Eagles are birds of prey

That soared in the skies and along the way

Found a new meaning in

Symbols that would begin

A nation that has been

A symbol of eagle’s strength since that day.

But eagles flew into

Human symbolism long before they flew

As symbols of our land.

And eagles still fly and

The Eagles were a band

And in the seventies they were a new

Rock band. “Take it easy.”

Their hit single was a style called “Country

Rock.” Eagles was their name.

The Hopi had the same

Symbol, and when they came

To the Mohave Desert to party,

The name drifted into

Their minds. Minds that were doing what minds do

In the Tequila and

Peyote haze the band

Found round Mohave sand.

And some may say that’s when the Eagles flew,

And Tequila Sunrise

Got its name. A song of when morning skies

Found a lonely hired hand

In the dreams, he planned,

Hoping for loving and

Never finding the right words as he tries.

And then the Eagles flew

To the Hotel California to do

Time. “Such a lovely place

With such a lovely face

In which, without a trace

You could disappear. The Eagles were new

In the seventies. But

In the sixties, I was there and learned what

California had to

Offer. I had to do

Things there, but I got through.

I flew before the hotel doors got shut,

Like a Byrd because they

Were the rock band that was there in L.A.

The Byrds’ songs came before.

In Nineteen-sixty-four,

They brought folk to rock or

Was it the other way round. But they’d play

In California too

And they performed their old sound that was new,

Bringing rock to Dylan.

“Mister Tambourine Man”

Was where they began.

Then they would “Turn, Turn, turn” as seasons do.

The Byrds like Eagles flew

“Eight Miles High” when they were on their way to

London and wrote their song.

But we thought, all along,

They got high with a bong.

Too high for a plane, so we thought we knew.

But they came down when they

Landed in London town with tunes to play.

They were not treated well

But had a song to tell

Their story and they’d sell

It, but found that London was not L.A

So the Byrds moved back there

I was there too, but soon I would be where

I started from and when

Eagles flew, I was then

Where Eagles fly again,

In Minnesota, where some folks take care.

Thanks Preston:

Before I went to Med School, I was in Northfield, MN

Teaching at Carleton College. It was not that far from

Wabasha and I may have been there once upon a time.

I lived in St. Paul when I was in Med School at the University

Of Minnesota. I was listening to the Eagles. And to the St.Paul

Chamber Orchestra. I think there were Eagles in Como Park

at the lake. But I didn't get out much. Med School kept me busy.

Congratulations on your Eagles.

Keep Soaring

Robert
