Sorry to hear you were a victim of covid, Preston. My husband just got vaccinated at the VA yesterday and they signed him up for second dose in 2 weeks. I, however, have not heard from NM Dept of Health yet, other than to hear there is no vaccine yet for my 74 years old asthmatic self. I do feel fortunate to have been spared this so far! Living in the clean mountain air helps. Take care!

Preston,

I second Marty's comment. Well done.

What a story! Nothing like adding a little drama to an already daunting 2000 mile drive! Out there on the road,  possibly in the middle of nowhere, wondering "Do I have Covid-19?"  Wow, glad you made it safely. That said, your immune system must be in great shape!

I just returned from the Durham VAMC where I received my first of 2 Pfizer COVID19 vaccinations.  They really had their stuff together.  Very well organizaed.  I moved through quite quckly.  Go back in 3 weeks for my 2nd vaccination.  Beth is on a waiting list with the Durham Health Dept.

Well, I guess I have to put in my "2 cents"...

Love reading everyone's experience with/without Covid. Steve and I have dodged the bullet so far and are very fortunate that we live in small town Colorado (Durango) and our Health Department is on the case! We are both going in for our 2nd shot on the 17th! we've been hermits since March - just a couple of camping trips and daily walks...

However, our daughter, Mira, contracted the virus back in November but, being young and hearty, made it through with 3 days/nights of sleep and loss of taste and smell (which has returned somewhat). It did, however, inspire her to write  The Covid-19 cookbook: Masticattion never felt so Wrong. It's funny and practical and availabe for about $4.00 on amazon!  Check it out!

Good Luck and Good Health to everyone! Hope you can smell that poop again ;-)

Hi from London. Here they are very organised which is a reaction to our huge numbers of cases and deaths. As of today, 9 February, about 18% of our adult population has received the first vaccination. Our wait for the second is up to 12 weeks which the experts feel is the best way to get most of the adult population partially protected and then start with the second jabs. My husband had the Pfizer 3 weeks ago and I had AstraZeneca 2 weeks ago. We have both been given appointments after 10 weeks for #2. I lost a close girlfriend to Covid on 11 January. She died within two weeks of testing positive at the age of 78. This was such a shock to me that I have continued to stay at home even more than before. We don't see our grandchildren or our friends at all. There is no date for the end of our lockdown when restaurants, stores, theatres or schools may begin to open again. Not great but this is my report from my side of the world! And, we had to watch the Super Bowl from 11:30 pm with the time difference. Otherwise everything  is ok!😊. Regards to all, Lauren Moss

Vernon, glad you got your shots!  And Lauren, it's really scary when you lose a friend!

This past Saturday (2/6) I received my second Moderna vaccine shot.  For that I feel most fortunate.  I feel even more fortunate that I no longer have any cancer in my body.  After 3 cancer surgeries the past 17 months, and 2 other suspected cancers, I have moved on to maintenance monitoring at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.  Next Thursday I head to Moffitt for a CT Scan of my lungs, where my cancer journey first started.  From there I go on to my other organs about 12 months out from my last scan of that organ.

All this makes me feel like I have won the lottery - TWICE.

Once again, I would like to thank all of you for your prayers and inspiring words of support.

Thanks,

Vic Brown

Pat and I are to get our first of two shots today. The Moderna vacine. We too feel fortunate that we can get ours now.

Most of Pats family had the covid19 virus. They did not follow any of the safety precautions. I guess that is what they do in a town of 1500 in Iowa. All survived, but some have after affects.

To all, stay safe and well.

That is great news, Vic! I hope to see you again at our 60th in three years. We'll have another Dewey School gettogether.

Vic, that angel on your shoulder is working overtime...and it's all good news. Enjoy every day you've got.

Very encouraging to hear many classmates are able to get their shots. Also, first mention of a 60th reunion. Pat F. - our class would need someone to head it up. Might you be interested in that role?

Congratulations, Vic. What an amazing journey! You're truly an inspiration.

I should have minded my words more carefully when wishing Vic well! In response to your question, Art, and in a word, "no", I really wouldn't be interested in heading up a 60th reunion effort. I did some peripheral work for our 25th, way back when, and I truly appreciate the Herculean contributions of a core group or folks who've led the committees repeatedly. However, for several reasons, I'd much prefer to allow others who may not have participated previously to lead the charge this time. Sorry!

P.S. On the other hand, I'd be happy to help organize a Dewey School gathering like the one we had for our 55th.

Hello

Thanks to all on the reunion committee Always a blast and so well organized!

Saw the name Nancy Schroeder on Long Boat Key  Yahoo !

Nancy: Flying into Tampa for a wedding March 6 at Long Boat Key Resort

Then staying a bit before back to my work bench. How bout a round of golf or tennis or wine ?

My treat . Anyone in the area join us ..  Some of my best Summer days were with you,

Nancy,  in Biology class at ETHS followed by antics at the Antioch homestead .

Glad to hear most have survived Covid !
That's it.  Betsy

Hi:  Vic - Would also like to add my congratulations on your outcome. Way to go. Pat: did not mean to put you on the spot. Our webpage has classmates creating mini-reunion get togethers and that is great. Reflects the fact that we have a very active class. You were the first one to mention a 60th. So I thought I would ask.  The big reunion committee has been phased out and financial accounts closed.  So, was trying to see if a new grassroots group had interest in one.    In looking ahead, it seems the trend after the 55th  is to have reunions covering 10 years of classes. My Mom turns 100 this year. I think she stopped attending her 10 year group reunions a whie back.

A Valentine  for 2021

In February, when

Valentine’s Day came, the snow came again.

But we expect it to snow

In that place that we know

As “Sweet Home, Chicago,”

Where we grew up, a long time ago. Then

We went to where there’s no

February snow. Still if we want snow

There are mountains to go

To in Colorado.

But I’m in Chicago

Well, a little bit north of there, you know,

Where we all grew up. So

Valentine’s Day in “Sweet Home Chicago,”

And I’m thinking of who

To write a poem to?

So this one’s just for you,

As I watch the snow outside my window

And I smile because love

Is in the air with the snow from above

Since it’s Valentine’s Day.

So what more can I say?

Though spring is far away,

It’s something to wish for and to think of

On Valentine’s Day. Though

“California Dreamin’s” for some I know,

I hope you will be fine

And be my Valentine

When my love’s the last line

Sent from the snow in “Sweet Home, Chicago.”

Happy Valentine’s Day.

A Day Just For Love,

Robert

It's very hard to add to the commentaries already posted about Bill Bunce. He was an all around good guy and am saddened by his death. I echo Mary's sentiments about the impact of his stroke as it cut short his enjoyment of the life he fully deserved. My deepest condolences to his family.

Holly Romans (Green)

It was so touching to talk with Bill at the last reunion.  So many of our class contributed to his 'in memory' on this website with such loving thoughts.  I don't remember a death that had so many responses.  That is a true confirmation of how well he was liked and respected.  Is there any way that his family can see how his high school classmates valued him and send them copies of these remembrances?  I send them my condolences.

Perhaps there is an on-line obituary for Bill where classmates can post condoences/memories.

I have just updated the "In Memory" post for Bill Bunce, adding his obituary and details about the Celebration of Life event that will be held on March 28 at 1 PM Pacific time (11 AM Chicago time).

I've also posted the same information below:

The following obituary was provided by Bill's wife, Jayne:

WILLIAM PROCTOR BUNCE

“BILL”

February 26, 1946 – February 13, 2021

Bill was born on February 26, 1946 in Evanston, IL to Thelma and Robert Bunce. He attended College Hill Elementary School and later graduated in 1964 from Evanston Township H.S. in Evanston, IL, where he played Sousaphone in the marching band and swam competitively for the Wildkits. There he made many life-long friends, participating and volunteering in several reunions over the years.

After high school, he attended Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH on a swimming scholarship. He also played intramural lacrosse and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, where he created many lasting friendships and memories. While at BGSU he married his first wife, Cheri Krudwig, and had his first son, Eric, in 1971.

After college graduation in 1968 (BA Psychology), Bill worked for IBM in Chicago in Sales and Marketing and began a long, successful career with various technology-related companies. In 1982 Bill married Jayne Klebau and 2 days later moved to London to work for Datapoint Corporation as their Director of International Marketing, working in over 15 countries.  He was 36 at the time. Over the years he won numerous performance awards that allowed him to continue to travel and enjoy the cultures of the world.

They moved back to Chicago until 2001 when, with their younger son, David, they moved to Alamo CA in the SF Bay Area, realizing a life-long dream.

Bill was the consummate host, loving any occasion to invite family and friends to share in his life and its celebrations, whether it was the annual family Thanksgiving dinner or a Christmas party with friends or the weekly “Cocktails on the Court” with Alamo neighbors or fundraising with Jayne for Northwestern Hospital. In the early 1980s he bought a house for his mother, Thelma, on Lake Kegonsa near Madison WI, where he, Jayne and Thelma hosted many weekends with family and friends, water skiing, sailing, and tubing. He was a patient ski instructor and wicked crack-the whip helmsman. (Bill always looked great, whether in a lake-soaked t-shirt or his tuxedo.)  He was a wonderful son, generous husband and friend, and a loving father and grandfather ‘Papa’.

Bill lived life to its fullest, always lit up a room, thoroughly enjoyed outdoor activities (sailing, snow skiing, golfing, hiking, swimming, maybe running, horseshoes, and leading Boy Scouts) and loved deep dish pizza, fine wines, bratwurst, BMWs, the Chicago White Sox, music ranging from the Rolling Stones to Handel’s Messiah, European travel, playing the piano by ear, and, yes, playing the comb. He was prompt and kind and a man of integrity.

Bill also was a man of faith and actively participated at First Presbyterian Church of Evanston where he was a Steven’s Minister and later at Community Presbyterian Church in Danville, CA where he was engaged in various bible studies. He and Eric also coached David’s teams in Upward Basketball, a Christian league for young players. He shared his gifts of the fruit of the spirit with everyone.

It was a crushing blow when Bill suffered a severe stroke in 2010 that left him incapacitated in many ways. But through those difficult times, he kept his sense of humor and love of God. He passed peacefully in his sleep in St. Petersburg, FL on February 13, 2021, days before his 75th birthday. Bill is survived by his wife, Jayne of Walnut Creek CA, sons Eric (Robin) Bunce of St. Petersburg FL and David Bunce of Walnut Creek, granddaughter Jordan, brother Robert (Bonnie) Bunce and many cherished extended family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Bill Bunce on March 28, 2021 at 1:00 PM Pacific time (11 AM Chicago time).  Please click on the following link in order to register for the event and to obtain the Zoom link:
