It gave me great pleasure to make my donation to Jack's award fund in memory of my father, ETHS Class of '37.

Although my memory maybe incorrect, I believe that my father, also, had Bernard G Mattson as a teacher, as I did. When I googled "BG" I found his birthdate was 1900, which made him around 63 when Jack and I were in his U S history class. Although he was a tremendously gifted teacher that challenged every answer you gave, I thought him to be extremely old.  That recollection will provide my dose of humility for the day. I also noticed that the History/Social Studies Department has a Bernard Mattson as well as a Nandine Clark Award. Jack, I hope that your Award will be right after theirs in the commencement program. How fitting that would be.

Thank you to my classmates for their efforts in making this Award a reality, and kudos to Jack for allowing us to have such a worthy honoree.

My donation, too, is in memory of my parents who chose to move to Evanston from Chicago when I was in 5th grade.  I have been, and will always be, grateful to them for this decision.  Congratulations, Jack! I'm so pleased to be part of this award in your name.

Dear Classmates,

I was unable to join you in Evanston for the big reunion in September. I have enjoyed following the forum and reading about all the things we are up to as a class. I thought I would add my own update.

I have accepted an offer to become CEO of L.A. Care in Los Angeles. L.A. Care is a large public health plans serving about 1.7 million people in Los Angeles County. After graduation I went to college in Illinois (SIU) and moved east after graduation. I have spent the last 45 years in Albany, Boston or Philadelphia. Now, pulling up stakes and moving to the coast.

Retirement is overrated and I love the work I am doing so this offer seemed like a good capstone to a long career in managed health care.

I am househunting in LA and open to suggestions.

JB

Joining my classmates, I contributed to the Rakove Award in memory of my great history teachers at ETHS: Charles Thomas, Justin Kestenbaum, Thomas Sharp, and Bernard Mattson.

John,  Don't know as you'd remember me, but I remember you!  A Hearty Congratulations on the very impressive new undertaking you're taking on.  Can't recommend any particular area to live, but I wish you all

the best!

I am pleased to donate to the Jack Rakove Award - in memory of those who are no longer with us, and in honor of the ETHS '64 grads in Colorado with whom I've re-connected.  In fact we're planning an outing in April to an exhibit about 1968 at the History Colorado Museum in Denver.  Looking forward to more visiting about the 60's!

I, too, have made my donation to the Jack Rakove Award in honor of Gerri Bach Deerfield who brought great happiness to my friend Jim Deerfield and also in honor of Wally Schnell, a unique individual that epitomized the spirit of the the ETHS Class of '64 and with whom I shared so many unforgettable memories.  As an aside, I just finished reading Jack's book, The Revolutionaries, and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves American history and is interested in the personalities and events instrumental to the birth of our nation.

                              AN AWARD WITH A DIFFERENCE!

(posted by Preston Cook, Kathy Dalgety Miehls and Rosanne Bass)

The Class of 1964/Jack Rakove History Award comes with a $1,000 grant and will be one of the most prestigious given by ETHS – and it will be different from all other awards at the school. Why?

Because finding one's way as an adolescent today is even more difficult than in our day; our award recognizes that and rewards development over time. The awardees will not have been born bookworms; they may not have been identified as child “braniacs.” They will not necessarily have brought home straight-A report cards. Rather, they will have caught a spark from their teachers that ignites and leads to an avid interest in history or the social sciences during their high school years.

Read what Jack Rakove wrote when he sent in his donation:

The idea behind this, which Kathy (Miehls) helped to work out with the social studies department, is neat . . . because rather than award excellence alone, it takes into account intellectual growth and the whole process of individual students coming alive to learning in the course of high school. . . . this really fits, I think, with what ETHS has become: still an excellent school like the one we attended, but also one that has evolved significantly over the half century (that amazing period) since our graduation.

Thanks to the generosity of more than 30 classmates, we now have funds totaling $11,000 – we’re on our way! The first award can be presented at this year’s Commencement ceremony.

A huge thank you to these classmates,

who donated since our last posting!*

I'm glad our efforts have been successful, and I hope we'll raise enough to make the Jack Rakove History Award a yearly event. I just wanted to note that my contribution was in memory of my dear friend EF Wen (Nancy Ling).

I, too, have donated to the Jack Rakove Award, in memory of Roy Gutman.  Does anyone know how much has been raised so far?

I'm donating to the Jack Rakove Award in memory of my parents who originated the nickname "Happy Jack" and who correctly observed that Jack's intellect was at a completely different level than that of my other friends.  Unfortunately, that bar wasn't all that high.  Sorry Pete.  In any event, I'm glad to be a part of it.

I was already familiar with the names of two distinguished alumni from the previous year. They, like Jack, live in California. One is actor Jeremy Pivens and the other is Astro Teller. He head's the "moonshot" projects at Google X and is the grandson of two Nobel Prize winners. Your relatives would not qualify you for this award nor would your class rank. But I am still curious.

I'm going to send in my donation to the JR scholarship as soon as I've finished posting.

Has anyone else wished they had a digital file of the reunion book? The trouble with only having a hard copy is there is no way to correct errors, make changes, or add to our contact information until the next reunion.

I propose the reunion book information be available as a download file on the website. Perhaps there is now an updated version to download.

How much time would be saved when arranging reunion get togethers, if one didn't have to manually transfer the information to send email to groups of local people. A few emails bounced back with "failure to deliver"

If that isn't possible then perhaps it could be sent as an attachment to individuals upon request. Someone would have to respond to these requests. If I had a copy to send, I would even volunteer to be that person.

Now I'm off to click on the donation link.

I agree with Fatima. There should definitely be a downloadable version of book. Like Fatima, it's far easier to make changes that way as well as not wasting paper and time re-posting on our site.

Please look at the new message on the "ETHS News" link in the left-hand column. ETHS was a featured story on the PBS NewsHour last night (Wednesday, May 27) for its amazingly successful acceleration of student enrollments in AP classes, especially for students of color, and the success rates of kids in AP courses is jaw-dropping across all races. There's a link there so you can view the PBS segment. I think you'll come away feeling proud to be an ETHS alum.

Charles Schulz

I have been very pleased with all the communication about the Jack Rakove Award and the great notes from the contributors.  I have read the great letters about the gifts and would like to note that the Fund is a result of the spirit of the class of '64.  The class was amazing in its interactions of our studying and discussions about how to move ahead.  Again, I am delighted with the award and the fund.  All the Best,  Chuck Schulz

Rosanne Bass (Keynan)

I agree with Chuck.  And I have made an additional gift to the fund in memory of the nine worshippers slain at their historic church in Charleston. --Rosanne

Afterthought: It has been interesting and rewarding to read all the comments. I wish there were a Facebook-like "Like" button! (Don't worry, webmasters Fred Brostoff and Art Hallstrom, it's not a request, just a wish. You are doing a praiseworthy job!)
