Plant a carrot get a carrot, not a brussel sprout

That's why I love vegetables -- you know what you're about

That's from The Fantastics

In Lenny Bernstein"s Candide, they sing

All's for the best in this best of all possible worlds

And the old lady sings: I'm suddenly Spanish

Robert

Yes, of course -- Try to Remember, etc. I hadn't read past "Voltaire" and "Cultivate your garden" -- the signature of Candide. I've always been a would-be lyricist -- next life, perhaps? Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, et al.

Fred, the 50th reunion photo gallery is wonderful.  Thank you, thank you soooo much, for putting it all together.  You did a great job.  The photos bring all the fun and great memories back.  We all look fantabulous!

Patrick Furlong

Looking through these picture galleries I was struck by a couple of things.  First, every event that I attended--Friday evening's get-together, Saturday's lunch and tour of ETHS, and that evening's dinner-dance--went off without a hitch, down to the smallest detail, so sincere congratulations and thanks to the committee who organized an absolutely flawless weekend.  Second, I regret not having attended every single event in order to connect with more classmates, particularly those whom I did not know well 50 years ago.  Going in I was wary of immersing myself in the weekend's activities, because when I attended our 25th reunion I was a bit disappointed by how alive and well the various cliques from our high school days still were.  However, the passage of 50 years appears to have dimished the tendency to reconnect solely with old friends, and opened us up to getting to know others whom we may have known only casually or even not at all--not hard in a class of 900 or so.  And that's the third, and most heart-warming take-away from the weekend.  So, thanks to all of my classmates for a truly affecting experience.  I hope to cross paths with many of you again.

I second what Pat Furlong has stated. Re the clicques, yes they were still somewhat evident at the 25th but I think that is the at least partially the result of comfort and familiarity and limited time to reconnect. (Our 3 day events however have always been wonderfully designed toward reducing that problem)

I do think based upon my personal experience the clicques softened at our 32nd and 40th reunions. I also think that the large number of deceased classmates that every one of us must have had connections to many of them has taken its toll on us as well as new maturity we may experience in our late 60's!

I can tell you personally that the tears well up in my eyes just seeing the names and knowing these people JUST AREN'T THERE ANYMORE!  It does not matter that I only used to say hi and really had no other relationship. I have had feelings I never thought of in the past, I imagine the result of out of sight, out of mind. However just picturing at least 60 of the people on the in memoriam list that I had met over the years I felt I knew well enough to to exchange hellos or very casual convesation with brings  sadness and tears welling up as I am now thinking/reflecting about how  these people, classmates, human beings have been cheated out of the pleasures of life that I continue to be blessed to  experience.

As I have said before, we were a great class of wonderful unique people....and we are fortunate that we have had and taken the opportunity to know more of the virtues of our classmates. And as I write this, regardless of my ramblings above,  an OBVIOUS DIFFERENCE in softening the clicques just occurred to me!! This web site has made a huge difference.

Reading the in Memorium stories and peoples profiles in the quiet of our own homes without outside influences has given all of us new insights into our classmates that NEVER would have ocurred without this website. And I have noticed over and over the remarkable effect this website has had in reading the postings our classmates have so unselfishly shared with everyone!

Time to say thanks again FRED and the committee to who I thank for not just the 50th. This core group of people have made possible the 10th, 25th, 32nd, 40th and 50th. I have attended all and am thank full! (Did we have a 15th?) Can anyone name where they all were?.

I'm also saddened by all of our classmates who are no longer with us. Some were friends I spent time with, others were in homeroom or classes with me. But I'm glad for those of us who are still around 50 years later. Paula Massey

While I had a wonderful time reconnecting with old friends (like even back to kindergarten), I came away that weekend with the realization that friendships can't be taken for granted. They need to be nurtured. To that end, several of us living in the Evanston area have committed to a monthly dinner outing, joined when they can by others who periodically travel through town. Good friends, good food, lasting friendships.

Kathy, that sounds so great. I'm envious. Maybe someone will initiate a get-together for L.A. or Southern California people.

Kathy: What a great idea. If anyone is out in Arizona (Scottsdale area), I would be interested in organizing a periodic get together.

Kathy - I don't live all that far away from Evanston.  I would be interested in occassionally joining your dinner group.

I love this idea, too.  My daughter lives in Glenview, so I travel back once or twice a year.  I also travel thoughout WA and OR. What fun if each local group would post plans on this site so travelers might be able to join in as well.

Get togethers are a great idea.   I live in east central Illinois - Champaign- to be exact and if anyone nearby or passing thru would like to get together for dinner etc let me know. Paula Massey

It's relatively easy to pull together a group of ETHS ’64 alums who live near you. In the booklet that was handed out at the 50th reunion, there's a section called "Where We Live" that geographically lists where all of us live (at least all who wanted to be included in the book). Check out who's around you, then look for them in the address listings further back in the book...and contact old and new friends by email or phone or snail mail. Don't wait for someone to contact you. You can start the ball rolling yourself. If you need a copy of the book, email me (kathymiehls@yahoo.com) and I'll send you one. Good friends, good food, a great evening!

There a few of us here in the triangle area in North Carolina.  We get together for lunch at least once a month and we recently had  a dinner together so spouses could meet spouses.  A great time was had by all!  A common thread always seems to appear and not just ETHS.  This fabulous website has made such a difference for our class to continue, in a way, the September reunion.  If anyone travels to the Raleigh/Durham area let me know when, to try and be included date wise in the "lunch bunch" group.

How wonderful to be able to revisit the reunion and see classmates by way of the posted photos.  Thank you Fred, and thank you Judy, Pat, Phil and committee for all that you did.....you really know how to throw a great reunion !!!

With the reunion events over, we are once again dismissed......and that final class bell may have rung for the last time......though I did hear classmates call out "see you in 5 years". It does have a nice ring to it.

Later,   Helga

To Preston Cook:

I have now invested 5 bucks for the transcript. We will soon know who the loser is!!!  :)

Do you have yours? Can't find your last correspondence re how to get the transcript.

Kathy, thanks not only for organizing here in Eanston but also for helping other groups figure out how to organize.  The possibility of continuing to see people is a great reunion legacy!

Hello Roseanne,

Jay and I have been in a running battle all year regarding our graduation status.  He has made outrageous statements claiming to have actually graduated in a lower rank than I.  He has been unable to substantiate all claims made to date.  We have both requested official transcripts to determine who graduated with a lower rank.  While there has been no cash bets made on who "wins", we both feel a strong sense of getting to the bottom, so to speak, of this pressing issue. Preston

Jay and Preston - thank you for keeping me so entertained - you are a riot!  How in the world do you think up such an interesting challenge?

You have the higher credentials. Please handle the question!

Preston -- Haha! Thanks for enlightening me as to the nature of the low-stakes wager. Do I remember from comparing during our lab-partner days that there were some 880 in our graduating class and that I was near 80 and you near 800? Funny, I can't remember discussing this with anyone else. Ever.

Preston and Jay.......I am laughing so hard over this wager of dubious distinction.  You have to let us know how this all ends.

Any best "guesstimate" on how long it will take to receive the transcript that is probably on microfiche or in a box somewhere at Iron Mountain?
