2018 Dinner In The Desert

Jay Siegall's brief trip to Phoenix was all the incentive we needed to gather our Arizona-based classmates for a mini-reunion.  Mark and Dale Goldman generously offered to host this event and put out a fabulous spread of appetizers, dinner and dessert at their beautiful home in Cave Creek, Arizona (at the northern end of the Phoenix metro area).  The Goldman home offered a comfortable and quiet venue where our classmates could renew acquaintances, some having been separated since high school.  Great food, good conversation, and a relaxed atmosphere (and beautifuly weather) made it a wonderful night in the desert.

We even sang the ETHS "alma mater" as we cut the cake.

“EASTER MYSTERIES” - A FRESH LOOK AT THE EASTER STORY

AIRING FOR FIRST TIME ON NBC - APRIL 1

NEW YORK, NY, March 22, 2018 – Imagine telling the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection while freeing the historic figures of the New Testament from their traditional text, costumes and staging – all accompanied by lush and complex music.

Imagine a dramatic production that highlights the spiritual message of the New Testament without perpetuating anti-Jewish stereotypes and caricatures.

And imagine a show that enables viewers to examine and explore their own ideas about faith and forgiveness through the struggles of the disciple Peter.

That is what producer John O’Boyle imagined when he created Easter Mysteries. This innovative production will be broadcast on NBC affiliates around the country on Easter, April 1. (Check your local listings for broadcast times.)

Created as a musical event for performance by theaters and churches, Easter Mysteries became a feature film after O’Boyle was encouraged by Fathom Events to make it available to their audiences. Fathom Events provides AMC movie theaters across the U.S. with filmed performances of live events.  Easter Mysteries was shown in over 300 movie theaters in 2016 and was broadcast on ABC in 2017.

Easter Mysteries depicts Jesus and his followers as practicing Jews,” said O’Boyle, a two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer (La Cage aux Folles - 2010; Vanya, Sonia, Masha and Spike - 2013).  “This framework is one that mirrors the increasing interest Christians have in the Jewish identity of Jesus and the cultural context of the mission he assumed,” said O’Boyle, who credits the Interfaith Broadcasting Commission for its support.

Directed by Daniel Goldstein (Godspell on Broadway) with musical direction of the cast and piano trio by Milton Granger, Easter Mysteries is performed by Broadway veterans from shows like Les Miserables, Sunday in the Park with George, Porgy and Bess, and The Phantom of the Opera.

The music, libretto and lyrics, written by O’Boyle, with arrangements by Milton Granger, combine to transform an ancient story into one that modern audiences can relate to.

O’Boyle said that the Easter Mysteries film can be used by religious groups seminaries, colleges and universities synagogues or any group interested in interfaith relations as well as spiritual development.

It is with sadness that I inform the class of '64 of the passing of Greg French.  Greg suffered a heart attack while returning from a cruise with his wife, Dottie, last Sunday evening. Greg and I grew up a block apart and shared many adventures and misdeeds.  We also both served in the Navy and overlapped our time spent in Hawaii stationed on different ships. Greg intrduced me to my wife, Claudia, and served as my best man at our wedding. The following link is for his obituary in the Chicago Tribune.  https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/chicagotribune/obituary.aspx?n=gregory-g-french&pid=188618287                Rest in peace my friend!

Sad news indeed. Thanks Tom. Had I lived the other side of Dodge with you Immsure I’d have been part of those misdeeds. I cry with the loss of each member of our class.  I think from our gang at Dawes Greg is just our second loss after Nancy Ling which broke my heart reading about her life after ETHS. Oops, just looked and discovered from our Dawes  class we have also lost ellen Nimerov, STEVE Fivelson,  Bruce Lomar, Sandy Hayden, Paula Wosk, James Maday and Ron Schram!! RIP ALL!! I don’t recall having any nick name for Dawes! Did we have one?

I didn't move to Evanston from Chicago until just before 8th grade at Nichols Junior High, but I remember Paula Wosk!  So sad to hear she's no longer with us!

We septegenerians need to say "I love you" and enjoy life while we can!

Saddened to learn of the passing of another of our classmates.  This past weekend I had looked at the "In Memory" section of this website and noticed no new additions yet this year.

Jay, I don't recall any nickname for Dawes.  However, the sledding/tobaggan hill next to the school which was originally a city dump we called Mt. Trashmore.

OK

Here's my I love you

For All of Us

Last Rose of Summer and First Rose of Spring

“ 'Tis the last rose of summer, Left blooming alone; All her lovely companions Are faded and gone;
No flower of her kindred, No rosebud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh.

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one! To pine on the stem; Since the lovely are sleeping, Go, sleep thou with them.
Thus kindly I scatter, Thy leaves o'er the bed, Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead.

So soon may I follow, When friendships decay, And from Love's shining circle The gems drop away.
When true hearts lie withered, And fond ones are flown, Oh! who would inhabit This bleak world alone?”

The Last Rose of Summer From A Selection of Irish Melodies by Thomas Moore

Some say love, it is a river, that drowns the tender reed.  Some say love, it is a razor, that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need. I say love, it is a flower, and you, its only seed….

Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows, Lies the seed, that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose”

The Rose by Gordon Mills

O my Luve is like a red, red rose. That’s newly sprung in June; O my Luve is like the melody. That’s sweetly played in tune.

My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns

“Love, Love, Love… Nothing you can know that isn't known. Nothing you can see that isn't shown. Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be. It's easy. All you need is love. All you need is love. All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.”

All You Need Is Love by McCartney and Lennon

Stems of Rosa Old Blush poke out of the slush,

She’s not first rose of spring, now winter’s done.

But last rose of summer, Rosa Old Blush

Brings on the songs of the very first one.

The seed that waits beneath the winter snows

For sun’s love to set new life flowering,

And melt away the bitterness life knows,

And bring the joys that love’s empowering.

Then I’ll sing to buds and blossoms of spring,

And be sure to water when the spring rains

Have passed by, when summer is beginning,

And roses’ blossoms are in all the lanes.

And we’ll walk when the trees are green and shade

Is what we will seek instead of sun’s heat.

We’ll walk hand in hand before Roses fade

With love, the flower that sometimes we’ll meet

Before the last Rose of summer will leave

Us alone, and love’s shining circle will

Not bind us with its ring. But let’s not grieve,

As we sing and first Rose of spring is still

In her seed, still awaiting the sun’s love,

The love, we all need, the love we can share.

Let’s join in love’s circle while sun’s above.

Let’s let love flower and make us a pair.

And we will twine in love’s circle like the rose

That climbs. And with that love we shall be bound

Together as time passes and love grows

There in the garden where we shall be found

In love forever as the world goes round.

Till the last rose of summer sleeps again.

Till songs of spring will wake her with their sound.

From her seed the Rose will blossom and then

Love shall be her name and we’ll sing of love

Forever because love is all we need.

It is the love I’m always dreaming of

“It is a flower, and you, its only seed.”

The Love that in the spring becomes the Rose

And spring and summer are Rose’s seasons.

It’s nothing I can know that no one knows,

Because my love has her lovely reasons.

And though Rosa Old Blush is the last one

Of the summer, there is still Rose’s seed

That’s waiting for the love of the spring sun

To sing love, love, love… Love is all you need.

Love keeps you warm in winter, makes you sing

In spring. It takes away the sadness of

The cold, dark days. For Love is everything,

Everything you need. “All you need is love.”

“I say Love, it is a flower, and you,

Its only seed.” And, “Love is all you need.”

When “The last rose of summer” rings so true.

But when the last rose goes, I’ll say god speed.

Till then in the garden we shall be found

Together as time passes and love grows.

In love forever as the world goes round.

Twined in love’s circle like a climbing Rose.

Twined in love’s circle in our flower bed,

As spring becomes the summer as seasons

Keep passing by. Then when all words are said,

When all love songs with their lovely reasons

Are sung. Hand in hand before The Last Rose

Of Summer, as before the first of spring.

Love will always be the first Rose that grows

“Love is all you need.”  Love is everything.

Robert

For all of the classmates that have moved and are no longer involved in Chicago/Evanston information - Carson's is closing all of in the State but also nationwide. How many classmates were involved in the Carson's Fashion Board during high school?

04/20/18 03:46 PM #881

Gale Glassner (Twersky)

I was on the Carson's College Board and helped with personal shopping during the summers at the end of freshman and sophomore years. I loved it and later had a career in color analysis for fashion and accessories, created and marketed my makeup personalized line (Gale Glassner Signature Series) with makeup application for weddings and special events, personal image consulting, and personal shopping, using all aspects of my profession, That was the step before I chose my current profession as a Hypnotherapist. Now I work on the interior best self for my clients. wink

I fear that my knowledge of fashion was limited to penny loafers, "wheat" jeans, and madras shirts. No way Carsons would have wanted me on the board. Carsons is part of Bon Ton; the whole company declared bankruptcy.

Lauren Dolinky (Moss)

I was on the Wieboldt’s high school board with Lucy Goulet, and then I was on the college board for Marshall Fields downtown.  After college I had a career at Chas. A. Stevens.  Not one of them exists now and to hear that Carson’s is going too! That is the end of retailing as we all knew it.  Laurie (Dolinky) Moss

Kristine Masko (Fuller)

The day I got the notice that I could not use my Carson's charge after a certain date due to their closing the stores was a big shock.  Some of these shopping malls are going to have huge empty elephants to fill once these stores go.

Have not been very active in this message forum but I certainly enjoy reading all your responses and how often you all see each other.  Think I would now like to be a part of my class of '64.  I certainly did enjoy high school as well as college but always seemed to be too busy to participate.  Hat off to all you active members.  Kris Fuller

Lee Saberson

I was not on any fashion board but Pam Beal's dad put us on the cover of an English textbook. It's flat. Is that considered a board?

04/22/18 03:17 PM #886

Sherwin "Jay" Siegall

May be a slow process Kristine:

But look for those empty big box retailers to be repurposed. Many will become medical complexes with a variety of medical uses from Dr's offices to walk in clinics, diagnostics etc. Will take a while for absorption but they will be repurposed and not many big box stores!

Lee,

HA! I still have a copy of the textbooks that you, me, and Steve Cohlmeyer were on the cover of! You were in a phone booth.  Do kids today even know what a phone booth is?  But let me say that if you weren't on a fashion board proper, you should have been!

Cheers,

Pam

I was not on a fashion board -- but the female editors were models for "bobbie sox" for ads in the Evanstonian.  They were worn with my saddle shoes.  Neither the sox nor the saddle shoes saw the light of day past high school.

Speaking of shopping malls, at least 1 summer Old Orchard had free concerts in 1 of its outdoor courtyards.  I heard a concert by the Village Stompers there.

04/26/18 09:57 AM #890

Holly Romans (Green)

I saw Louis Armstrong perform at Old Orchard for free either the summer of ‘64 or ‘65 when OO was sponsoring concerts.  I was on the Old Orchard Marshall Fields College Board the summer of ‘65.  Those of us on “the board” had to wear a Courreges (yes, designer stuff) mini-suit with white boots which was way beyond my fashion sensibility which at the time was more like Villager clothes.  I was never comfortable in that Fields getup.  At any rate, the disappearance of these iconic stores that were part of our growing up is not just sad but symbolic of the change in retail of all sorts brought on by the internet which at that time was a notion that we probably couldn’t even begin to imagine.
